Gearing your dog up for a overnighter or a multi-day backpacking trip is pretty simple. Much like your own pack list, it varies with personal needs/likes, terrain, time of year, etc. but the basics are the same.
Here is my pack list for an upcoming 3 day 2 nighter:
- Dog Pack - I use the Ruff Wear Palisades Pack for longer trips.
- Dog Boots - Ruff Wear Bark'n Boots Grip Trex are my choice for rough conditions or when an injury occurs.
- First Aid Kit - Don't forget the tick removal kit
- Treats - Zuke's Power Bones dog treats are a good performance treat.
- Collapsible water bowl - The Ruff Wear Quencher dog bowl is good for my large dog.
- Collapsible food bowl - The Ruff Wear Quencher Cinch top is my choice. The top can be closed, good since my dog often doesn't finish a meal on the trail.
- Dry food separated into Ziplock bags
- A small fleece blanket for a sleeping pad
- A tennis ball or a Turnup - Labs are easy to keep occupied!
- A leash - I like the Ruff Wear Roamer leash which doubles as a 15' tie-out when needed.
- Biodegradable Poop Bags
- Ruff Wear Beacon - Don't lose your dog at night
Depending on your dog or the conditions you'll be hiking in, you might also consider some of the following:
- A dog coat
- A thicker dog bed
- Medications
- Chew toys
- A traffic leash
